1 Articles
Articles on George Walker have appeared in the Library of Congress and more than a dozen publications, including Fanfare, Musical Quarterly, New Music Connoisseur, The New York Times and The Washington Post.

2 Parents
Dominique-René de Lerma, Professor of Music at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, has been writing about African heritage in classical music for four decades.  He has generously made his research entry on George Walker available to this Website:

His father was a physician who was born in Kingston, Jamaica and immigrated to the U.S.  He graduated from Temple University Medical School in Philadelphia. Walker's mother was Rosa King, a native of Washington, D.C.

3 Birth
George Theophilus Walker was born in Washington, D.C. June 27, 1922.  The boy was 5 when he began to study piano with his mother, according to the research entry.  We learn from the Walker Website:

His first teacher was Miss Mary L. Henry.  Mrs. Lillian Mitchell Allen, who had earned a doctorate in music education, became his second piano teacher.

4 Piano Debut
When Walker was 14 years old, he gave his first public performance on the piano at Howard University, his Website explains, and also graduated from Dunbar High School.  Prof. De Lerma continues:

He studied music in the Junior Department of Music at Howard University.

5 Oberlin College
Prof. De Lerma relates Walker's studies at Oberlin College:

A scholarship enabled Walker to enroll in Oberlin college at age 15, in 1937. David Moyer was his piano professor, and Arthur Poister taught him organ. Walker was 18 when he received his B.M. Degree, leading his Conservatory class in honors, in 1941.

6 Curtis Institute
Prof De Lerma notes Walker went on to study at the Curtis Institute:

At the Curtis Institute of Music, he studied piano with Rudolf Serkin and Mieczyslaw Horszowski, and chamber music with William Primrose and Gregor Piatigorsky.

We learn from his Website that Walker also studied composition at Curtis with Rosario Scalero. The Website continues:

He graduated from the Curtis Institute with Artist Diplomas in piano and composition in 1945, becoming the first black graduate of this renowned music school.

7 Youth Auditions
In the year of his graduation from Curtis, Walker won the Youth Auditions in Philadelphia, as Prof. De Lerma details:

It was in 1945 that he won the Youth Auditions in Philadelphia. He made his recital debut at Town Hall in 1945 and orchestral debut as pianist in the third concerto of Rachmaninoff with the Philadelphia Orchestra, conducted by Eugene Ormandy.

The young pianist then toured actively in the U.S. and Europe.

8 Study in France
The research entry lists the people with whom Walker studied in
France, including the legendary Nadia Boulanger:

When in France he studied with Robert Casadeus, and was one of the few private students of Nadia Boulanger at the American Academy, which he first attended in the Summer of 1947 as a student of piano.

9 Eastman School
Dominique-René de Lerma tells of George Walker's receipt of a D.M.A. from the Eastman School of Music:

He received the Doctor of Musical Arts Degree and the Artist Diploma in 1956 from the Eastman School of Music, which institution presented him with with the Alumnus Citation in 1961.

10 Fulbright Fellow
George Walker recounts the circumstances of his studies in Paris in
1957 and 1958:

I studied composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris on a Fulbright Fellowship in 1957.  I was again at the American Academy in Fontainebleau on a scholarship in 1958.

11 Professor
The faculty positions held by George Walker during his teaching career are summarized by Prof. De Lerma

His earlier teaching career included Dillard University, the Dalcroze School of Music, the New School for Social Research, Smith College, and the University of Colorado-Boulder.  Subsequently he taught at the Peabody
Conservatory of Music, the University of Delaware, and in 1969 joined the faculty of Rutgers University-Newark, where he was departmental chair and designated
Distinguished Professor in 1976. Walker received a second Guggenheim Fellowship in the 1970s.  He retired in 1992.

12 Honors
The research entry summarizes a number of fellowships, grants and awards received by Walker:

On graduating from Eastman in 1957 (D.M.A.), he won a Fulbright and a grant from the John Hay Whitney Fund the next year.  A grant from the Bok Foundation supported his European concert tour in 1963.  He received the Rhea A. Soslund Chamber Music Award in 1967.  He won a Guggenheim award in 1969, and was resident at the MacDowell Colony in the summers of 1966 through 1969.  Awards were granted in 1971 and 1974 and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1972 and 1974, with an award from the Hans Kindler Foundation in 1975.  In 1996 he became the first Black awardee of the Pulitzer Prize.  He has also been honored with grants from the American Music League and the Bennington Composers Conference.

13 Pulitzer Prize
George Theophilus Walker won the Pulitzer Prize for music in 1996.  Prof. De Lerma notes the award in a survey article in Africana Encyclopedia:

In 1996, late in his long career, he became the first African American to win the Pulitzer Prize in music, for  Lilacs,  a piece for voice and orchestra.

14 Courses Taught
In February 1987 Bruce Duffie had an extended interview with George Walker which can be read at Duffie's Website, www.BruceDuffie.com/Walker.html

One of the questions Duffie asked was: "You've been teaching musical composition for quite a number of years?"  George Walker replied:

It hasn't been just musical composition. In fact, that's been a very limited part of my teaching.  Over the years, my teaching has really centered around advanced theory courses, and since I've been at Rutgers, a number of other courses in music history, romantic music, 20th century music and orchestration and even conducting.  I did teach composition for a few years at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University.

15 Publication
Another question drew an enlightening response on the the importance of publication to the acceptance of Walker's works.  Bruce Duffie asked: "As you approach your 65th birthday, is there anything that has especially surprised you either about your own music or music in general?"

I couldn't say that I'm surprised.  I felt all along that I would possibly get into synch with the world.  I was clearly out of synch for a long time.  I was ahead of my time as a pianist when the concert managers didn't want to accept a black pianist.  I was writing music that wasn't performed except by a few people for a long time, and I made an effort to concentrate on getting my music published with no success initially and then little success, and all of a sudden I made the acquaintance of Paul Kapp, a very remarkable man who died a few years ago, and who published the bulk of my music because he believed in it.  To him I owe an enormous amount of gratitude because without those publications, the performances of my music would be limited.  He had a firm belief that it was important and should be widely heard, and the publication has provided me with a base to attempt to widen the awareness of my music.

16 Sheet Music
With the exception of two anthologies, Walker says, all of his music was published most recently by MMB Music in St. Louis, Missouri.  That firm's concert music titles have been assumed by Lauren Keiser Music Publishing Co.
